Presentation at EACS 2026: “Inside/Outside the System – Independent Performance-Making in Postmillennial China”

On 22 July 2026, Fabrizio Massini presented his paper, “Inside/Outside the System: Independent Performance-Making in Postmillennial China”, at the European Association of Chinese Studies (EACS) Conference, held at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy.

The paper was part of a panel entitled “Amateur Cultural Practices in China: Authors, the Establishment, the market“, with contributions from Martina Benigni and Désirée Marianini (Sapienza University of Rome) and Federico Picerni (University of Bologna). The panel was organised by Federico Picerni and chaired by Justyna Jaguścik (University of Bern).

Artist Talk with TAO Dance Theatre’s Tao Ye

Following the exceptional critical acclaim of its debut in 2025, Beijing’s TAO Dance Theatre returned to ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival for a new series of performances. Between 20 and 26 July 2026, the company presented the double bills 13 | 14 at Volkstheater and 16 | 18 at the Burgtheater, pairing the acclaimed 16 with the world premiere of 18, the latest work in Tao Ye’s celebrated Numerical Series and a co-production with ImPulsTanz.

As part of the festival’s public programme, Fabrizio Massini moderated an Artist Talk with choreographer and artistic director Tao Ye. The conversation explored TAO Dance Theatre’s artistic practice, the evolution of their Numerical Series, and the company’s approach to choreography, offering the audience further insight into one of the most influential voices in contemporary dance.

Presentation: Reflecting the Present through the Republican Past — Affective Historical Dramaturgy in The Nine’s Republican Cycle

In July 2026, Ting Zhang presented her paper, “Reflecting the Present through the Republican Past: Affective Historical Dramaturgy in The Nine’s Republican Cycle”, at the Australian Society for Asian Humanities (ASAH) Inaugural Conference at the University of Sydney, followed by the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR) World Congress at the University of Melbourne, where she presented as part of the Translation, Adaptation and Dramaturgy Working Group.

Focusing on the contemporary Chinese theatre collective The Nine (话剧九人), the paper introduced the concept of “affective historical dramaturgy” to examine how the company reactivates Republican-era history as a reflective framework for engaging indirectly with contemporary social, ethical, and intellectual concerns.
